Meditative Writing

What it is and what I contribute to this publication

Background

Since 1995 I have been one of a number who, like ZD Finn, follow a particular stream of teachings. No priest stands between us and the spiritual because access is through the soul, the “God in us.”

Accessing soul

How does one access the soul? Through meditation* in the case of meditative writing, of course. Otherwise it can be through nature, music, the arts, or anything that moves you. It may be while daydreaming or in that half-awake/half-asleep state. Much of this article was composed in my head as I was waking up.

Noting down your meditative experiences

If you meditate regularly you might want to note your impressions or images that come into your mind. New thoughts and ideas might occur to you later in the day or during your contemplation or visualization.

With some training and much practice, this can be further developed into a real awareness of the guidance of the soul. It may express as the figure of a teacher or as a stream of light, and the meditator may choose to speak and record or write down the images and thoughts.

Communicating with the spiritual

Communication with the spiritual is not a science. The conditions can never be reproduced, let alone the result. I would say it is more of an art, in that it both reflects and elevates the soul.

It expresses in symbols, images, parables. Sometimes it comes as a “chunk” to download and translate into your own words, or it might be fully formed words and sentences.

It may not be literal or “fact.”

It rises and falls, ebbs and flows. It is affected by and filtered through the mood and experiences of the recipient. But if there has been contact there will be a ring to it that feels right, that touches the familiar, resonates with experience or a core feeling. And always a light shines through the transparent tableau of the artist.

Who is speaking? It is the part of you that is more You than you. That feels like home. It is a sensation like no other that I believe is the end station of all seeking and striving, the real reason behind the strife and warfare and greed and dissatisfaction in the world — the frustration of not knowing what is missing. It was there all along. You just have to know where to find it.

What will follow from me in Above the Clamour

And so what I will post are extracts from my own writings. It is a process, however imperfect. But my hope is that it will shed a little light on some of the deep changes affecting the world today.
